Matt Made It Work

Personal project

Sidekick Panel

Work in progress. A little animated world on a 64 × 32 LED panel that responds to commits and builds.

A build result, out of the corner of my eye

I want to be able to glance over at my desk and see that something changed while I was working. One scene has a little desk spirit. Another has a tree that grows as work progresses.

The panel only needs to know what happened. A small event can tell the scene how a build went, so there’s no need to send over the code or the build log.

I’m working on the scenes in an emulator. It lets me see how much of a gesture or a change in the light will read in 64 × 32 pixels before I try it on the physical display.

A tree that forgot it was getting dark

I’ve been working on the weather and daylight in Sidekick Panel’s little world. As the scene faded toward night, the highlight on the tree canopy kept shining at full daytime brightness. The tree looked like it hadn’t got the message.

The highlight now dims along with the rest of the scene. It’s a small change, but on a 64 × 32 display, a few bright pixels can draw your eye away from everything else.

There’s so little room in this little world that details like this give the whole scene its personality.
