Matt Made It Work

Personal project

MeatReader

A wireless BBQ thermometer I’ve been working on for a long time. The thermometer serves its own dashboard so I can check the probes from my phone.

Project log

From a probe in the smoker to a number on my phone

MeatReader is one of those projects I keep coming back to. The part I want to use is simple enough. I want to open my phone during a cook and see what each probe is reading. The little box at the smoker has to do quite a bit to give me those numbers.

Each probe changes resistance as it heats up. The board measures that change, and the firmware uses calibration readings to turn it into a temperature. MeatReader can follow up to four probes at once. The ESP32 serves the dashboard itself, so my phone can pull up the readings over Wi-Fi right from the thermometer.

The hardware has been through several revisions. One piece even found a second job. When I needed a knob and a small display to test my car audio filter, I already had both on a MeatReader board. If you’ve seen the controls on my ESP32 signal generator, you’ve seen a little bit of the thermometer too.
